Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that can stop an opioid overdose. Naloxone is sold in a nasal spray form, Narcan®, and as an autoinjector, Evzio®. An early study found that giving naloxone to patients on opioid therapy for chronic pain was associated with fewer opioid-related emergency room visits, especially among patients receiving high doses of prescription opioids.
