• Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS). PCSS is a program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) created in response to the opioid overdose epidemic to train primary care providers in the evidence-based prevention and treatment of opioid use disorders and treatment of chronic pain.
  • PCSS: Approach to Use of Opioids in Patients with Low Back Pain. This free module provides primary care physicians with an approach to using opioids for low back pain. Roger Chou, MD, Professor of Medicine at OHSU emphasizes the need to consider using opioids within an overall pain management plan that:
    • Addresses psycho-social contributors to pain
    • Recognizes that opioids are not first-line treatment for low back pain and may not be appropriate in all patients
    • Uses non-opioid treatments
    • Routinely incorporates risk mitigation and reassessment strategies
  • CDC: Training for Providers – Applying CDC’s Guideline for Prescribing Opioids: An Online Training Series for Healthcare Providers. Sign up to learn how to apply CDC’s recommendations in your clinical setting through interactive patient scenarios, videos, knowledge checks, tips, and resources. Check back often for updates and new courses. CE credits available.
  • Health.gov: Pathways to Safer Opioid Use is an interactive training that promotes the appropriate, safe, and effective use of opioids to manage chronic pain. This course is based on the recommendations in the National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention (ADE Action Plan). CPE or CME credit is available.
  • ACP: SAFE Opioid Prescribing: Strategies. Assessment. Fundamentals. Education. This recorded course provides clinical insights from the SAFE Opioid Prescribing Blueprint. CME credit and ABIM Medical Knowledge MOC points are available upon completion of all six modules and by correctly answering at least seven of 12 medical knowledge questions.
  • Pri-Med: SAFE Opioid Prescribing. This curriculum is designed to increase prescribers’ understanding of appropriate patient assessment and prescribing practices that can help reduce misuse, abuse, and overdose deaths associated with ER/LA opioid analgesics. Credits available: 2.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ or 2.80 AANP, including 1.25 AANP Pharm.
